The sausage as we know it has been around, since 9th century BC and was even mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey (that’s the ancient Greek Homer, not the loveable rogue from The Simpsons).

The next significant advance was in Germany in the 15th Century, butchers in the town of Frankfurt made a soft sausage we now know as The Frankfurter – or Frank.

We jump to the 19th Century. The people of Vienna (Wien), Austria point to the term “wiener” to prove their claim as the birthplace of the hot dog. It is said that the master sausage maker who made the first wiener got his early training in Frankfurt, Germany.

In 1880, A German peddler, Antonoine Feuchtwanger, sold hot sausages in the streets of St. Louis, Missouri. He would supply white gloves with each purchase so that his customers would not burn their hands while eating the sausage. He saw his profits going down because the customers kept taking the gloves and walking off with them. His wife suggested that he put the sausages in a split bun instead. He reportedly asked his brother-in-law, a baker, for help. The baker improvised long soft rolls that fit the meat, thus inventing the hot dog bun. When he did that, the hot dog was born…

The 1904 World’s Fair, also called the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the purchase of Louisiana from France by the United States. This event gave Antonoine Feuchtwanger the ideal opportunity to introduce the world to his simple but tasty hot dogs. A little known drink called Dr Pepper was also showcased at the event!

World Fairs have since played a vital importance in pushing innovation ever since. We’re looking forward to Expo 2020 and support the bid from Dubai http://expo2020dubai.ae/en/ to host the event. We appreciate Antonoine Feuchtwanger having the world stage in 1904 to showcase the hot dog which is ever popular today. Who knows what innovations will be brought to the fore at such an event…

You tasty little triangles, all dressed to impress…
When we put Nachos on the menu, we decided they had to be freshly toasted to order, tastily topped with Cheese, Salsa, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Jalapenos and at an affordable price.

Nachos may have originated in the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, just over the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. One day in 1943, the wives of 10 to 12 U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan in nearby Eagle Pass were in Piedras Negras on a shopping trip, and arrived at the restaurant after it had closed for the day. The maître d’, Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, invented a new snack for them with what little he had available in the kitchen: tortillas and cheese sauce. Anaya cut the tortillas into triangles, added shredded cheddar cheese, quickly heated them, added sliced jalapeño peppers and served them.

When asked what the dish was called, he answered, “Nacho’s especiales”. As word of the dish traveled, the apostrophe got lost, and Nacho’s “specials” became “special nachos”.

A different version of the dish, with permanently soft cheese and prepared tortilla chips was marketed in 1976 by Frank Liberto, owner of Ricos Products, during sporting events at Arlington Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This version became known as “ball park nachos”.

We top ours U.S style with a seriously addictive aged cheddar cheese sauce but if you’d prefer – ask for grated cheddar. They make a great side to share with a couple of our gourmet hot dogs or order them first for a seriously tasty starter, at £3.65 a portion they’re great value too.

On Tuesday the 8th of May 2012 we had the pleasure of opening our second Primo’s at Xscape in Castleford. All the usual favourites are on the menu plus we have introduced a new Italian sandwich range – if they prove a hit we will add them to our regular range in both shops. We have a fantastic San Remo coffee machine in place and all of our staff have undergone full barista training.

We are yet to finalise exact opening hours but we will be open 7 days a week well into the evening/night.

Thank you to everyone who visited our first Primo’s in Leeds over the last two years, your support has been essential in driving us forward.

Xscape is a great place to visit with so many activities available, from indoor surfing to ten pin bowling and now your favourite hot dog joint is there’s no excuse not to drop down real soon!

On Monday 26th March we were presented with the award for Best Fast Food at the Oliver Awards courtesy of The Yorkshire Evening Post. It is almost 2 years to the day that we opened the doors of the first Primo’s in Leeds’ Corn Exchange. Many people doubted a gourmet hot dog restaurant would work in the UK. Now with business strong, we are in a position to open a second, larger Primo’s and this will be coming to you in early May.

We would like to thank The Yorkshire Evening Post for the award. A big thank you to our hard working, loyal team. To our cast of customers past, present and future – thank you for your support!

This classic dog often tops Primo’s best seller list and is widely regarded as the connoisseurs hot dog of choice!

We refer of course to the champion of hot dogs – the Classic Chicago.

The “Chicago Style” hot dog got its start from street cart hot dog vendors during the hard times of the Great Depression. Money was scarce, but business was booming for these entrepreneurs who offered a delicious hot meal on a bun for only a nickel. The famous Chicago Style Hot Dog was born! They’d start with an all beef hot dog, nestle it in a steamed poppyseed bun and cover it with a wonderful combination of toppings: yellow mustard, fresh chopped onions, juicy red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a couple of spicy sport peppers and finally, a dash of celery salt. This unique hot dog creation with a “salad on top” and its memorable interplay of hot and cold, crisp and soft, sharp and smooth, became America’s original fast food and a true Chicago institution.

The Chicago area boasts more hot dog restaurants than McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King restaurants combined! Travelers passing through Chicago’s O’Hare airport purchase 2 million Hot Dogs each year – this makes O’hare the biggest Hot Dog seller in the United States. Due to the appearance of this iconic hot dog, many diners request for their dog to be ‘dragged through the garden’. It is a real faux par in the Windy City to put ketchup on a classic, in P’s we only ever use French’s Mustard!

We hold heritage dear and reproduce the Classic Chicago at Primo’s in the same fashion as it has been served for many years. We have to agree with Frank Sinatra, any place that gives us such a great tasting hot dog is ‘My Kind of Town’…

In our never ending quest to offer foods and products that are just that bit different we recently introduced the Cubano Sandwich.

In a world where almost every ‘cookie cutter’ brand on the high street sells the modest Panini we searched for something more. As is often the case, this search led us to the USA…

The Classic Cuban sandwich consists of pulled roasted pork, ham, pickles, Swiss cheese and yellow mustard, layered in Cuban bread. We marinate the pulled pork for up to 24 hours in our homemade mojo sauce:

This recipe makes enough to marinate 1kg of pork.
1/3 cup olive oil
6 to 8 cloves garlic,
2/3 cup sour orange juice & lime juice
(equal portions)
1/2 tsp ground cumin.
1 tsp dried coriander.
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Once assembled we toast the sandwich lightly on a plancha – a flat plate press.

This delicious sandwich originated in Havana and quickly became popular among Cuban communities in Key West, Tampa and Miami.

To cater for all tastes we also offer the following other Cubano’s:

Jerk – Caribbean spiced chicken with Monterey jack cheese, chopped tomatoes and red onions.

Pavo – Turkey breast, crispy bacon, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and chipotle mayo.

Athena (v) – Feta cheese, black olives, chopped tomatoes and red onions.
