The Leeds Guide
The concept is a relatively simple one. Everyone likes hotdogs, but feels a bit dirty after eating those cheap canned things – who knows what on earth constitutes the meat in them? So, the team behind Primo’s Gourmet Hotdogs did the smart thing – they decided to make hotdogs only with quality sausages (no less than 86% meat). Much like Gourmet Burger Kitchen reclaimed the burger from the McDonald’s and Burger Kings of the world, so we hope Primo’s might start doing the same with the dog.
We went down to review Primo’s and discovered that while their diner-cum-takeaway names itself after its ‘gourmet hotdog’, they actually offer a whole lot more. New York bagels, salads, artisan ice cream, luscious thick shakes and fruity smoothies. And breakfasts of porridge and pancakes. Oh, and perhaps most impressive of all, really good coffee.

LS pays a visit to a new addition to the Corn Exchange to see what it has to offer.
Primo’s gourmet hotdogs is a new café looking to cater to those that want a lunch with a difference.
The menu consists of a selection of six different hot dogs, ranging from the classic ‘Chicago’ – a beef frankfurter topped with onions, pickles, tomato wedges, celery salt, ‘ball park’ mustard and a dill pickle spear, through to the more exotic ‘Matador’ – a chorizo topped with monterey jack cheese, tomato salsa and chopped white onions and the ‘Big Easy’ – a Lincolnshire pork sausage with crumbled blue cheese, crispy bacon and pine nuts. However it’s not just about the hot dogs, with Primo’s also severing salads, New York deli bagels, fries and nachos, as well as coffee, indulgent milkshakes and ice cream.

The Corn Exchange in Leeds underwent a huge refurbishment a couple of years ago. The plan was to renovate the building, a Victorian trading hall and one of the most striking spaces in the North, and turn it into a massive food hall, with independent food retailers filling the units and a big ‘anchor’ restaurant in the basement.
A great idea, a little ambitious, but a good plan none the less.
Then the recession happened.
The whole building stood empty for a while until Leeds uber-chef Anthony Flinn opened in the basement area and life started to creep back into the old place.....

To give it its full title: Primo’s Gourmet Hot Dogs...but that doesn’t quite do justice to this new cafe/diner inside the Corn Exchange.
For a start they don’t just offer hot dogs they also do salads, bagels, smoothies, shakes plus great ice cream, coffee and cakes – more about the sweet stuff later.
We felt obliged to start by sampling the hot dogs, obviously. There’s a good selection – six options ranging from a classic Chicago (beef frankfurter with onions, pickled tomato wedges, celery salt, ‘ball park’ mustard and a dill pickle spear) up to a Big Easy (lincolnshire pork sausage with blue cheese, bacon and pine nuts.....
